Every career starts somewhere. Mine began in 1979 with sports photography during the golden age of tennis and iconic champions like Bjorn Borg, John Mc Enroe, Jimmy Connors, Chris Evert, Matts Willander, Ivan Lendl, Michael Chang, Pete Sampras, Yannick Noah, Boris Becker, Martina Navratilova, Steffi Graf, Andre Agassi, etc. However, at the time, shooting tennis alone was not enough to earn a decent living, so I added football, and occasionally golf, skiing, Formula 1, basketball, athletics and volleyball ball, to my professional activities.

The several hundred photos in this chapter, represent the tip of the iceberg. Photos of tennis on the courts of Grand Slam tournaments, Roland Garros, Wimbledon and The US Open, the Masters, Monte-Carlo, Rome,... plus football photos from 3 World Cups; Spain 82, Mexico 86, Italy 90. Finals of European Cups and championships in Belgium, Holland, France, Germany and Italy with champions like Michel Platini, Diego Maradona, Socrates, Karl-Heinz Rummenigue, Paolo Rossi, etc.

In numbers, it adds up to 10 years as a freelance sports photographer, several hundred magazine covers in Belgium and abroad and about twenty books on tennis and football including participation over 6 years on the book, « Roland-Garros seen by the twenty best tennis photographers in the world », art directed by Yann-Artus Bertrand and published annually by Hachette.

But that was in an other life…
